Step 13 - Silence is Golden

Day 13 of the National Blog Post Month challenge where I’m writing a blog post every day along the theme of 30 Steps to Happiness and Contentment.



We live in a world of sensory overload.  Everyday our brains have to process the bombardment of sights, sounds, tastes and smells from the man made world around us.  Every now and then it's good to switch everything off, close your eyes and just listen to the silence. 

 How often is there nothing going on in the background?  I know in my house there's usually something noisy going on - either the children playing, the TV, radio, computer, CD player, DVD player, MP3, Games console, washing machine etc etc.  I am usually surrounded by noise most of the time that I find myself craving silence.  I love listening to music and find it uplifting and calming, but nothing is quite as calming to me as the sound of silence.

So if you get the opportunity from time to time when you are alone, switch everything off, close your eyes, relax and just try listening to the silence, it's a beautiful sound we rarely hear!

  1. So funny - I'm sitting on the sofa with the laptop and until 5mins ago I had the tv on aswell. I suddenly realized that I wasn't even watching it, it was just noise. We are so used to background stuff that we are almost immune. Shame.

  2. I know what you mean, there's usually so much going on we cut it out. Except today where I seemed to be acutely aware of all the background noise and found it impossible to concentrate!
